Cinnamon bark plus stone fruit? That may be the first time I've added a "?" to a tasting note. But, this nose and palate doesn't stop evolving. It's fruit then spice then sweet and back again. This is all with an overlay of some nice dried rosemary and other herbal notes.
Brown sugar, sticky maple bars and dark cherry. The heat is tamed by roasted coffee and dried fruit. Rich and deep. There is some brightness on the finish with fresh cracked pepper and orange peel.
Honey and sweet oak meets caramel apple. The glass smells like the angel's share in a warehouse. Sweet and lightly dusty. The finish on this bottle shines! Long with notes of pecan pralines and clove.
Toasted chocolate croisant. Black pepper bites with buttered cinnamon toast. This bourbon is punchy. It lives up to the "Action" in its name.
Cedar, honey and honeysuckle make a beautiful nose. There's a touch of tobacco leaf and spent coffee. Subtle but complex notes of toasted baking spice and black berry jam form towards the back of the palate. Iced gingerbread cookies make an appearance after a rounded finish.
The collection hails from ten six-year-old barrels which received a final aging of two years in the “sweet spot” of a second rickhouse to create additional harmony and balance.
The bourbon found in Blue Run 8-Year-Old Single Barrel will be familiar to many, as it was one of the exceptional whiskeys featured in the recently released Blue Run Trifecta, which received a Double Gold Medal and was named a finalist for the Best Straight Bourbon in the prestigious 2023 New York Wine and Spirits Competition.
The barrels standing proudly on their own in this eight-year-old expression were hand selected by Blue Run Liquid Advisor Jim Rutledge.
